rakes the moisture out. don't look for much, maybe a dusting north up toward gaithersburg is really it, 28 to 32, couple flurries with snow showers possible, mainly north and upper 30s to low 30s, no problems for the evening commute. we'll come back and talk about the morning commute because the snow showers won't go away until after the morning commute is over. up in baltimore today it's a good bet there's a whole lot of folks just trying to recover from a wild night after the ravens' emotional super bowl victory over the 49ers and now the plans are all set for the big celebration to continue in the city tomorrow. scott broom is live at the ravens m&t bank stadium with more on the team's second lombardi trophy since football came back to baltimore in 1996. scott. >> reporter: what a great day in baltimore and the ravens' plane is due back this hour. although airport officials are discouraging fans from going

out there. instead they're planning a big blowout here in baltimore that will close a lot of downtown tomorrow. it was a wild night of celebration in baltimore. and the party continued today at souvenir stands under canvas that popped up in parking lots all around baltimore. >> we've got to have something to wear at that parade tomorrow. >> reporter: where fans literally mobled a merchant named dan the t -- mobbed a merchant named dan the t-shirt man who had championship clothes printed ready to sell at midnight. >> then i'll be able to be a part of it here. >> i've looked everywhere for this shirt and finally found it. >> gave us the pride back. believe me, the ravens gave it to us. >> i love having everybody at my place for the parties. i love seeing the hope and pride in everybody, everybody wearing the purple and the team backs the fans, too and that's the wonderful thing about the ravens. they are as much into the fans as we are into them.

>> reporter: and before the hangovers faded city crews were busy today erecting barriers for the very large crowd expected to fill downtown streets for a parade to welcome the team home. that will start at city hall at 10:30 in the morning and end with a free celebration inside m&t bank stadium beginning at 12:30. last night's revelers were described as mostly behaving themselves by baltimore city police, though one 7-eleven store was looted and a number of vehicles damaged including at least one tv news truck. police blocked traffic on the jones falls expressway from entering downtown after the victory to prevent larger crowds from gathering. >> something that i just can't believe. >> reporter: but there's still plenty of enthusiasm left over today. >> the ravens on the table today of. >> reporter: and that certainty carried through to tomorrow's celebration.

>> reporter: the guy i just showed you selling popcorn has made up purple and gold popcorn. that's great. if you're not wearing purple in this town today and tomorrow, you're definitely not part of the tribe. it is going to be a big celebration tomorrow. they're expecting tens of thousands of people. the parking lots here at m&t bank stadium open at 9:00 in the morning. it's not going to be a tailgate affair. that's prohibited. the stadium opens at 10:30. people flow in for a 12:30 celebration if they don't want to catch the parade running from city hall to here at the stadium. so a lot of downtown will be closed tomorrow and a lot of people will be here wearing purple and cheering for those ravens one last time this season. reporting live at m&t bank stadium in baltimore, scott broom, wusa9. >> sounds like dan the t-shirt man will be in line for a summer home. well, wusa9 will be streaming live coverage of tomorrow's parade and rally in baltimore

on our website, www.wusa9.com. it gets going around 10:45 a.m. then tune in for our live special game on purple rain tomorrow night 7:30 right here on wusa9. and the baltimore ravens super bowl championship came after a really bizarre game that featured a half hour blackout that just may have sparked an amazing comeback. >> reporter: the ravens are headed back to baltimore as super bowl champions, but many fans will remember this game as the blackout bowl. >> i wanted to know who is in charge for paying the power bill at the superdome. >> reporter: shortly into 3rd quarter half the lights went out in the superdome. interior sections of the stadium were almost completely in the dark. the outage left fans and players dismayed and the announcers speechless. >> i wasn't sure if they would be able to restart the game tonight. >> reporter: after 34 minutes the lights finally came back on. officials say the power system sensed an abnormality and shut down by design. >> there was another system

that they were ready to reboot just about when the system came up. so we did have another alternative. >> reporter: new orleans has already expressed interest in hosting the 2018 super bowl here in the superdome. it's unclear if the outage could affect that bid. the blackout stopped a ravens blayout who were ahead 28-6 at the -- blowout who were ahead 28-6 at the time. san francisco's offense surged scoring 23 points in the final two quarters, but the ravens' defense and the retiring superstar ray lewis stopped the 49ers' final drive. >> baltimore, we coming home, baby! we did it! >> reporter: the longest super bowl in history featured several story lines, a battle between two head coaching brothers, joe flacco's mvp performance and a nonlip syncing performance from beyonce, but it was the power outage that provided the biggest twist.

>> as she says, longest super bowl ever because of that power outage. the game lasted four hours and 14 minutes. super bowl mvp joe flacco is a man of his word. after he left new orleans this morning he showed up at disney world. fans cheered as flacco joined mickey mouse for a parade down main street in his honor at disney's magic kingdom. after orlando it was on to new york city where joe flacco will be david letterman's guest on the late show. you can watch right here on wusa9 11:35 right after wusa9 news at 11:00. president obama took his campaign to reduce gun violence to the midwest. in minneapolis today he asked for the public's help to push congress to take action. tara mergener has the latest from the white house. >> reporter: president obama took his gun control message on the road sitting down with law enforcement officials and community leaders in minneapolis. >> we don't have to agree on

everything to agree it's time to do something. >> reporter: the president praised the minneapolis police department pointing to the city's success in tackling gun violence. he is also trying to reach minnesota gun originals as he works to rally public support for his -- owners as he works to rally public support for his proposals to curb gun violence. >> i need everybody who is listening to keep the pressure on your member of congress to do the right thing. >> reporter: this is expected to be the first of several trips the president makes to push his plan outside washington. proposals for a new ban on assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines are already meeting a lot of resistance on capitol hill. >> i have a hard time telling my constituents in texas that congress is looking at passing a whole raft of new laws when the laws that we currently have on the books are so woefully unenforced. >> reporter: outside groups on both sides of the issue are turning up the pressure on

lawmakers. elizabeth keish is one of 350 college presidents that signed a letter supporting stricter gun laws. >> as far as educators who care about the safety and well-being of young people, we needed to stand up. >> reporter: the all right calls for keeping guns off college campuses as well as universal background checks and a new assault weapons ban. >> president obama is also pushing for easier access to mental healthcare and more cops on the beat to help address gun violence. the new secretary of state john kerry got down to business today. staffers held a welcoming ceremony for the former massachusetts senator this morning at the state department. on his first day on the job kerry told them president obama needs their help to make america safer and the world more prosperous and peaceful. he also said he has big heels to fill referring to his two predecessors, hillary clinton and condoleezza rice. three high schoolboys charged with child pornography were back in class today at

west springfield high school and some students and parents are not happy about that. peggy fox joins us live from west springfield high. i understand this was a story that's difficult for you on a personal level. >> reporter: yes. west springfield high school is my alma mater and whenever you're connected to a school and something like this happens, it's very disturbing on a personal level. three teenage boys, two 16-year- olds and a 15-year-old, all sophomores, are charged with child pornography accused of making sex tapes of underage girls and then sharing that video. a short time ago we spoke to two girls who know these boys and they had just talked to them and came over to us seeking us out to speak out for the boys. >> they really regret it and they're really sorry about it, but they've also like -- i feel like it's been blown up a little bit. >> reporter: the three boys are 10th graders. two of them are accomplished athletes who according to several sources had the talent to play at a division 1 school. now the three of them are each

charged with child pornography. >> on january 11th we arrested three west springfield high school students all three.s, two are 16, one 15 -- all three boys, two are 16, one 15. >> i have a sexual -- they'll have the sexual offender on them all their lives. >> reporter: police called the six females in the case victims, but some students believe there must have been some culpability. >> they knew how much they were drinking. they knew they were going to get drunk. >> there have been allegations that these girls were drunk, that the boys got them drunk and that they had passed out. i assume if that were the case, there might be rape charges as well. >> things are being said by other sources. i can't confirm that. >> reporter: police have not charged the victims with any crime and most students we talked to have sympathy only for the girls, not the boys. >> i'm disappointed someone in your school would do that because you need to represent

your school and be a good example to others. >> i think they just let down everyone who goes here. >> reporter: do you think they should be expelled? >> they should be more than eke pelled. this is a really serious -- expelled. this is a really serious crime. if they were 18 or -- >> reporter: we're told that the six victims, the girls in the case, attend several schools including west springfield. the investigation is ongoing. there may be more charges. it all started back on november 29th. that's when police first found out about it. someone went up to the school's school resource officer and told them about it. we'll stay on the case and let you know if there are any other charges. i'm peggy fox reporting live in springfield. arlington county police are looking for four men after a smash and grab jewelry store robbery today. this is some surveillance video from the zales at pentagon city mall from 11 a.m. investigators say two men pulled out hammers and started smashing display cases inside

we've got an update on that breaking news from that nearly week long hostage drama in alabama with the little boy. cbs news reports the standoff ended a short time ago and we're told 5-year-old ethan is alive, although we don't know anything about his condition. cbs also reports the alleged kidnapper jimmy lee dykes is dead. dykes snatched the little boy last tuesday after he stormed a school bus and killed the driver. he had been holding ethan in an underground bunker on his alabama property ever since. we're standing by for a news conference. we'll bring it to you when it happens. a decorated former marine charged with shooting and killing a former navy seal sniper is now on suicide watch. >> eddie ray routh is in a texas jail held on $3 million bond and now police are trying to determine if he's suffering from trauma from the iraq war.

>> reporter: texas guards tasered and confined eddie ray routh sunday night after he became violent inside the jail. he's charged with killing chad thefield and chris kyle at a shooting -- littlefield and chris kyle at a shooting range. the shooting happened saturday at a sprawling gun range outside fort worth. police say routh shot the men multiple times with a semiautomatic gun. he was arrested on a texas highway a short time later. routh's neighbors say they can't understand how the iraq veteran who received 10 medals and honored for good conduct and humanitarian work could be facing a capital murder charge. >> real nice, real easy going, unbelievable that he snapped for something like that. >> reporter: authorities say routh went to the range to get help from kyle. the former navy seal sniper stated a charity that helps veterans struggling with physical and emotional disabilities. >> while it sounds backwards i

actually think time on the range and using those skill sets in the controlled and safe environment could be a huge benefit to veterans. >> reporter: last year kyle wrote the book american sniper that became a new york times bestseller. the book catapulted him to fame and many veterans sought out his help. kyle leaves behind a wife and two children. authorities are holding routh on a $3 million bond. breaking news for you, but it's good news out at bwi airport. that, my friends, is the baltimore ravens deplaning as it were back from new orleans and their big win over the san francisco 49ers last night in the longest super bowl ever because of the little power issue about halfway through, ravens very excited, though looking a little tired coming down the stairs. you can hardly blame them, everybody very excited. there's going to be a big parade and celebration in baltimore tomorrow morning 10:45. we'll stream is live on

southwest at 7, pressure falling as the clipper approaches. temperatures 35 in rockville, 33 bethesda, 34 reston and fairfax not bad, 35 in springfield, college park and 34 toward waldorf. here's our clipper and it looks pretty impressive now. what happens, though, all this will fall on the west side of the divide on the mountains, so great news for the ski resorts from snowshoe up to timberline up to wisp. after that not a lot of snow shower activity makes it over into the immediate metro area. again i think the best chance will be north of town frederick and north gaithersburg north and certainly you'll see a little accumulation west of hagerstown. other than that a couple showers passing to our south through st. mary's city and st. mary's county but not causing too many problems. so another clipper tonight, snow showers possible mainly north, a dusting maybe north and west of town. evening commute looks fine, no

worries at all. tonight 28 to 32, cold, flurries or snow shower mainly north, low temperatures upper 20s to low 30s, winds southwest at 10. by morning we still run the risk of a couple snow showers, 20s and 30s, light wind, don't think it will be a problem for the morning commute and by afternoon pretty nice day actually, highs near 45 becoming partly cloudy with light wind. that will feel pretty nice. the next three days our 9 weather alerts are green. so tuesday maybe a morning snow shower, clouds coming back tuesday night, pleasant on wednesday in the upper 40s and thursday we're almost near 50. the next seven days look like this. look how warm it's going to get. temperatures will flirt with 50 on friday, saturday pretty good, a little cooler but still nice and sunday we're flirting with 50 and next week, well, low 50s but raining. we haven't had any snow more much rain. we'll take anything we can get.

lead -- valerie erwin is leading the snap challenge. hundreds of people are voluntarily trying to shop for food for five days on $5 a day. >> we're going to be eating a lot of beans this week. >> reporter: more than 65,000 people in the county have no choice. >> look at this. buy one get one. >> reporter: men, women and children surviving on five bucks a day because that is all they get from the federal supplemental nutrition assistance program. >> i'll get tuna and bread and beefroni and frozen vegetables. >> reporter: you could eat ramen noodles all week at 11 cents a serving, but they are also absolutely terrible for you. they have about 40% of your daily allowance of saturated fat in each serving. >> the biggest challenge is nutrition. what can you get that's healthy for $5 day? >> reporter: the snap program has surged since the great

recession. the number of americans getting help has doubled in the last four years. and some conservatives have suggested that it is out of control. >> i'll get the rice. >> reporter: but many of the snap challenge volunteers -- >> take this one out? oh no. >> reporter: found it really hard. >> i've got to put back the tuna and the mayonnaise. >> reporter: to come in within their budget. >> i'm going to go home and figure out how to eat off of that for a week. >> reporter: you know, food prices here in the d.c. region are particularly high, so it is even more of a challenge here for people to afford to feed themselves on the snap program. you can still participate in this snap challenge and then on friday everybody is going to get together at the civic be in silver spring 6:00 and talk about -- civic building in silver spring at 6:00 and talk about how hard it was to manage this. >> let's hopefully talk about how we get people that need

this resource the most a little more than $25 a week to make it all work. the world's biggest hamburger chain has hooked a new item on its menu, fish mcbites. you can order the bite size cod fillets in a standard or happy meal entree. the restaurant says these fried fish pieces will be available through march to coincide with lent. not to be outdone, pizza hut is rolling out more than just pies. the chain introduced its pizza sliders today. they are smaller than a personal pan pizza. they can be ordered in customized batches with your favorite toppings and you can buy them by the box, nine sliders for $10, three for five. pizza hut hopes the mini pies will help spark a growth in the sales. a push to raise the speed limit on the enter county connector appears to -- the intercounty connector appears to have paid off. the speed limit is going up to 60 from 55. the decision comes after an engineering study and crash analysis.

the new speed limit is expected to take effect by march 31st. new warning signs about curb speeds are expected to be put up. another civil rights leader is being honored with a forever stamp. the u.s. postal service unveiled the postage that bears the image of rosa parks. the commemorative stamp was released today on what would have been her 100th birthday. a statue of the long time d.c. resident and abolitionist leader frederick douglass is being prepared to be moved from one judiciary square to the u.s. capitol. last year congress approved a resolution sponsored by d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton that the douglas statue join statues of luminaries from all 50 states in the capitol's statuary hall and norton asked it to be dedicated this month in honor of black history month. the girl who survived a taliban attack has spoken out publicly now. >> malala yousufzai is now

recovering at a british hospital after yet another operation. >> reporter: malala yousufzai sifted through get well cards as she made her first public states since the taliban gunmen tried to kill her. >> today you can see that i'm alive. i can see you. i can see everyone. >> reporter: the 15-year-old said god gave her a second life after taliban militants fired a bullet into her head on a school bus in pakistan nearly four months ago. >> and i'm getting better day by day. it's just because of the prayers of people. >> reporter: malala made the videotaped message before walking back into a british hospital for another round of surgery. after five hours in the operating room surgeons reported success. doctors say they reconstructed malala's skull with a titanium plate and restored her hearing. >> i'm feeling more right and i'm happy that the operations, both the operations, are successful. >> reporter: support for malala has stretched from here in england to countries around

we've got an update now on breaking news from that nearly week long hostage drama that wrapped up in alabama just a short time ago. authorities gave a brief statement saying the fbi stormed that underground bunker believing the 5-year-old boy being held hostage was in imminent danger. the boy was rescued and the alleged kidnapper jimmy lee dykes is now dead. dykes snatched that the boy last tuesday after he stormed a school bus and killed the driver. he had been holding ethan in an underground bunker on his alabama property ever since. they were communicating with him through a tube. this standoff is now over. right now safety investigators are trying to find the cause of a deadly tour bus crash in southern california. at least eight people were killed and another 40 others injured. this happened on a narrow mountain road last night and investigators say the bus was full of mexican tourists.

it slammed into a car, then flipped over and hit a pickup truck pulling a trailer. all the people killed were passengers on the bus and that bus was on its way back to tijuana. five people including a baby survived a small plane crash in a utah field. >> check this out. one of the passengers captured everything on his cell phone camera. >> we're going to land in the field right here. is everybody okay? >> turns out everybody was okay. a pilot's friend was taking jonathan fielding and his family on a recreational flight for jonathan's wife's birthday, but there was a problem with the fuel line and the engine just shut down. the plane crashed in the field there with jonathan's cell phone camera rolling the whole time, but everybody climbed out okay. jonathan says he was pretty scared but trusted the plane would land smoothly.

topping tonight's health alert, new research that shows the threat of bullying does seem to lessen as gay or bisexual adolescents get older. overall these kids are more often the target of bullying than their straight counterparts, but this report in the journal of pediatrics indicates things get better for a lot of them with age. for example, 57% of lesbian or bisexual girls report bullying at age 13 or 14 that. drops to 6% by age 20 or 21. among the boys bullying dropped from 52% to 9% over the same time frame, so good news there. hopefully we can eradicate it altogether. also how medicine is going ultra hi-tech helping doctors be in more than one place at 1 time. we're talking robots making hospital rounds for them.

dr. paul vespa has an unusual way of making his rounds at ronald reagan ucla medical center. dr. vespa uses a robot to check in on his patients, a camera mounted on his computer sending a live picture of himself to the patients and he uses a joystick to control the robot's movements. >> i just want you to do a couple things for me. can you hold up your hands way up in the air? >> reporter: 27-year-old kevin sitner was admitting for bleeding in his brain. doctors examine him in person, but he also has periodic visits from the robot. >> i think it's pretty cool. it's probably the next best thing of having a doctor actually come in and talk to you. you see his face and he can see you. it feels like you're talking to the doctor. >> right now we have tremendous delays in our healthcare delivery largely because we don't have enough physicians in enough locations. so this could really revolutionize the distribution of patients to physicians.
